This page describes the VW Westfalia Vanagon Camper built for the USA and Canadian markets between 1980 and 1983. If you are looking for information on the European specification models CLICK HERE.
The name Vanagon is derived from a combination of “Van” and “Station Wagon”. The name Vanagon was used in the US and Canadian markets. In Europe this model was called “Transporter” or “T3” (and in the UK was commonly referred to as the “T25”).
The first 1980 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia Camper models were available with 4 cylinder 2.0 litre (1970cc) aircooled fuel injected engines. The engine was still mounted in the rear as it had been on the VW bay window Type 2 model that the VW Vanagon replaced. The 2.0 litre engine was available with either manual 4 speed gearbox or an automatic gearbox. In 1982 a 1.6 litre (1588cc) diesel engined bus (water cooled) was added to the range initially with a 4 speed gearbox and then in 1983 with a 5 speed gearbox .
You can normally tell if a VW Vanagon Camper is one of the earlier aircooled versions by looking at the front. The air cooled versions have only a single headlight grill. The water cooled versions have an extra front grill below the headlight grill. As although still rear engined the radiator is located at the front. The extra front grill was required to allow air flow to cool the radiator.
The VW Westfalia Vanagon campers were designed for the market in the USA and Canada and were available only in Poptop (elevating roof) form. Whereas the model built for Europe was available in both poptop and hightop versions.

T6T6 Assuan Brown (LH8B) (Assuanbraun)
In 1982 there was a model update whereby the colour of the furniture was changed to beige with a dark brown edging. The upholstery material was changed to either blue/brown stripes or green/brown stripes depending on the external colour specified.
The exterior colours available and interior options after this 1982 change were:
B9B9 Ivory Beige (L567) (Elfinbein) as above - Available with interior upholstery van Dyck Green/Brown (KW) or van Dyck Blue/Brown (KD)
J5J5 Medium Blue (LH5G) (Mediumblau) as above - Available with interior upholstery van Dyck Blue/Brown (KD)

and a new exterior colour:

Initially the Volkswagen Westfalia Vanagon Pop Top Camper was available in two different interior layouts known as the Standard version (P22) and the Deluxe version (P27). After 1982 only the P27 Deluxe layout was available (the P22 layout was dropped from 1982 onwards).
Volkswagen Westfalia Camper Pop Top Standard Version P22
The VW Westfalia Vanagon Camper Standard P22 layout consisted of:
1) Kitchen Block 71 cm wide x 50 cm deep, sink, electric pump for tap, draining board and cover plate.
2) Camping seat left side with integrated freshwater tank (Some confusion about size of tank as 1980 Vanagon Camper brochure shows 7.5 Gallons (approx 30 litres) whilst 1980 Vanagon Brochure states 14.5 US gallon (55 litres) for P22.
3) Clothes closet over the engine bay.
4) Roof locker below roof bed.
5) Cushion 120 cm wide over the engine bay.
6) Full width rock n roll bed (bed is 188 cm x 160 cm at the front and 188 cm x 120 cm at rear when folded out) with bedding storage area under seat.
7) Rear table on swinging arm (80 cm x 40 cm) with off white surface finish and dark brown edging trim.
8) Front table on swinging arm (60 cm x 40 cm) with off white surface finish and dark brown edging trim.
9) Large 30 litre (8 US Gallon) icebox.
10) Three point seat belts in front and 3 x rear lap belts.
From introduction in 1980 to late 1981 interior consisted of brown woodgrain furniture and brown upholstery with multi coloured rectangles.
Westfalia Vanagon Camper P22 (Pop Top) with “Van Dyke EN” (dark brown with multi coloured cubes) upholstery
This option was available only with the “Ivory” exterior colour.
Westfalia Vanagon Camper P22 (Pop Top) with “Gazelle EP” (light brown with multi coloured cubes) upholstery
This option was available only with the “Medium Blue” and “Assuan Brown” exterior colour.
Volkswagen Westfalia Camper (Pop Top) Deluxe Version P27
After 1982 only the P27 Deluxe layout was available (the P22 layout was dropped from 1982 onwards).
The deluxe version was an upgraded version of the P22 with the following additions:
11) Kitchen Block 87 cm wide x 45 cm with 2 flame LP gas cooker powered from underfloor 5.5Kg (12 lbs) refillable propane gas tank.
12) 45 litre (1.5 cu. ft.) fridge working from 12v, 110v AC or LP gas.
13) Storage space with integrated freshwater tank. Some confusion about size of tank as 1980 Vanagon Brochure states 13.2 US gallon (50 litres) for P27 but drawing in same brochure states 40 litres which would be about 10.5 US gallons. From 1982 onwards it is clear that the freshwater tank in the P27 configuration camper was 10.5 US Gallons (40 litres).
14) Clothes closet with mirror on inside of door and rear closet with 3 shelves.
15) Cushion 120 cm wide over the engine bay.
16) 3/4 width rock n roll bed for 2 persons (bed is 188 cm x 120 cm when folded out) with bedding storage area under seat.
17) Rear table on swinging arm (80 cm x 40 cm)
18) Front table on swinging arm (60 cm x 40 cm)
19) Three point seat belts in front and 2 x rear lap belts.
20) Dry chemical fire extinguisher.
21) Two speed front windshield wipers with intermittent cycle feature.
From introduction in 1980 to late 1981 there were 2 options available for the seating material called “Van Dyke EN Boogie Woogie” (dark brown with multi coloured cubes. This option was available only with the “Ivory” exterior colour) and “Gazelle EP” (lighter brown with multi coloured cubes. This option was available only with the “Medium Blue” and “Assuan Brown” exterior colour).
These materials are not as hard wearing as those used in later Westfalias and consequently when buying an older Vanagon Camper it is worth taking an extra look in areas of high use such as the drivers seat and the rear seat edge. If the seats are worn it is difficult to get replacement material of the same design.
For 1982 when the beige furniture was introduced the upholstery was also changed to either “van Dyck KD” (brown and blue stripes) or “van Dyck KW” (brown and green stripes).
This material seems to be harder wearing than the earlier options (see above) but can still show signs of wear on seat edges etc.
From introduction in 1980 to late 1981 if “van Dyke EN” (dark brown with multi coloured cubes) was specified the curtains, rear armrest and carpets were dark brown.
If “Gazelle EP” (lighter brown with multi coloured cubes) was specified the curtains, rear armrest and carpets were light brown.
For 1982 when the beige furniture was introduced if “van Dyck KD” (brown and blue stripes) upholstery was specified the curtains and rear armrest were made from material with blue and brown dots.
If “van Dyck KW” (brown and green stripes) upholstery was specified the curtains and rear armrest were made from material with green and brown dots.

The double bed in the roof on pop tops was light brown for all early Vanagons.
The roof canvas on pop tops was light brown for all early Vanagons.
The rear flooring was a multicoloured lino and this was covered by a removable square brown carpet with a non slip rubber backing.
The front carpet in the cab was a tan coloured brown.
7) 1980 - 1983 VW Westfalia Vanagon Camper Door Trim Specification

If “Gazelle EP” (lighter brown with multi coloured cubes) was specified the the door trims, headrests and seat vinyl were light brown.
For 1982 when the beige furniture was introduced if “van Dyck KD” (brown and blue stripes) upholstery or Van Dyck KW” (brown and green stripes) upholstery was specified the door trims , headrests and seat vinyl were dark brown.
